5 Must-Have Items To Bring Backpacking

Table of Contents

After two years of travelling, I’ve experienced firsthand the frustration of forgetting essential items. However, I’ve also discovered other valuable items that you wouldn’t think of that are essential to bring travelling!

Drawing from this experience, I have compiled a collection of five essential backpacking items that will revolutionize your travel experience.

From water filters to travel insurance, find out what you need for convenience, safety, and comfort on your next adventure

Water Filter

A water filter is an essential item for your travels. It helps you to save money instead of constantly buying bottled water, and it helps reduce plastic waste, making it both environmentally and budget-friendly!

It can also ensure you always have access to clean water when hiking or travelling in remote areas.

I love to use the Sawyer Mini filter as its compact, saving precious space in my backpack. This filter can purify up to 80,000 gallons of water and is highly durable and portable, making it a perfect companion for long-term travel.

Stay hydrated anywhere in the world. This compact water filter removes 99.99999% of bacteria and protozoa. Perfect for outdoor adventures!

Money Belt

A money belt may seem a little excessive, but it can significantly enhance your safety from pickpockets. I found one extremely useful in keeping my money safe when visiting densely populated areas in Colombia and Peru.

A money belt can also keep your money dry if you’re caught in a sudden downpour.

I recommend the Ryaco Money Belt as it has RFID blocking material which can prevent your credit card information from being swiped!

Sleeping Kit: Eyemask and Earplugs

Constantly moving between comfortable and uncomfortable beds, and being awoken by late-night drunken antics from other travellers (you can guess what type of antics) significantly reduces my sleep quality whilst travelling, leading to a spaced-out Matthew.

I overlooked the benefits of wearing earplugs and an eyemask, however, since I invested I’ve been able to block out much unwanted noise and light and my sleep has improved alot!

I recommend the Gritin Silk Eyemask & Earplugs. The Silk mask is skin friendly and acts as a complete blackout of all out, which is super useful as its on your face for 8 hours.
